Julian Haszard

Dr. Julian Haszard, Director

Julian grew up on a farm in Taranaki, New Zealand. Concurrent with studying dentistry at the University of Otago Julian undertook officer training in the NZ Army.  In 1998 Julian started climbing with a group of Dunedin climbers lead by John Davidson. His passion for climbing was further developed through two courses with AATC (NZ Army). While practising dentistry in London Julian took the opportunity to climb in the French Alps, summitting Mt Blanc in 2002 with Chamex

In 2003 Julian climbed Cho Oyo 8201m with Himex lead by Russell Brice. After the expedition Julian spent four weeks working as a volunteer dentist with Mingma in the Khumbu Valley. During this period Mingma and Julian established the early plans for SmileHigh. Julian reached the summit of Mt Everest 8848m with Himex on 23 May 2004. During the years 2005-2007 while studying for a doctorate in orthodontics in Melbourne Julian worked with Trevor Moyle establishing a foundation for SmileHigh. Julian is now a qualified specialist orthodontist and director of SmileHigh. Julian has now made four trips to Nepal. The most recent in 2006 for three weeks and 2008 for 4 weeks, both times focussing on dental work. Julian still has a large interest in high altitude climbing and is passionate about SmileHigh.

Dr. Mingma

Dr. Mingma Nuru Sherpa, Director 
DDTH (Canada) BDS (FiJi)

Mingma Nuru Sherpa was born in Khumjung a remote village in the Solu-Khumbu situated in the lap of Mount Everest. Mingma went to Khumjung High School; the first school built by Sir Edmund Hillary. In 1990 Mingma completed school with distinction. Then Mingma’s life changed when he won a scholarship from the Everest Marathon Foundation UK to go to dental school in Canada. Travelling halfway across the world to study was a huge adventure for Mingma.

Mingma commenced study at the National School of Dental Therapists, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1991 and graduated with a Diploma In Dental Therapy in 1993. Mingma then returned to the Everest region and worked at the Namche Dental clinic for 5 years as a dental therapist.

In 1999 Mingma applied for a scholarship to complete his training as a dentist.  Mingma was very fortunate to receive a further scholarship from the Everest Marathon UK in 2000. After a further 3 years of study Mingma graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of South Pacific (Fiji) in 2002. Mingma also undertook 5 weeks of undergraduate training in oral surgery at The University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand in 2002. This study in NZ was sponsored by Sir Edmund Hillary who was a close friend of Mingma and his family.

In 2003 Mingma completed a one year internship at the People’s Dental College in Katmandu to gain his registration with the Nepal Medical Council and Nepal Dental Association as a fully qualified Dentist.

Mingma is a founding director of SmileHigh and is responsible for all project activities within Nepal.

Trevor Moyle

Trevor Moyle, Director (Chairman)

Trevor joined the Board of SmileHigh in December 2006 as a Non-Executive Director and Chairman.

Trevor is a Principal of ACG Corporate Advisory Pty Ltd, a business unit of the Allen Consulting Group, and is currently Chairman of Orchard Investments Management Ltd, the SRE for the Timbercorp Orchard Trust and Timbercorp Primary infrastructure Fund (ASX Listed) with funds under management of approximately $300m. Trevor is also a non-executive director of Sirius Corporation ltd (ASX Listed). He is past Non-Executive Director and Chairman of Ceramic Funds Management Ltd, a property funds management company with funds under management of approximately $200m.

Trevor is also Chairman of the Melbourne Chapter of the University of Otago Alumni.

Trevor has expertise in corporate finance and advice, funds management, corporate governance, capital management, equity capital markets, business planning and strategy development.


Sarah Macartney

Sarah Macartney, Director

On completing her studies at the University of Otago Sarah moved to Melbourne to further her interest in Marketing undertaking post-graduate studies. It was at a University of Otago Alumni event in Melbourne which Sarah came into contact with Julian Haszard and what was then known as 'The Himalayan Dental Health Foundation'. Recognising the potential in the vision which Julian was creating Sarah was keen to offer her marketing skills and energy to help grow 'The Himalayan Dental Health Foundation' into what is now known as SmileHigh. Concurrent to her work with SmileHigh Sarah is part of a charitable organisation offering mentoring to underprivalged children in regional Victoria.

Sarah is a Director of SmileHigh focusing on the marketing and PR of SmileHigh whilst working in a full-time marketing consultancy role in Melbourne.

Nicholas Garland

Nicholas Garland, Secretary 
LLB (Otago), BCom (Otago)

Nicholas' role as Secretary is primarily to perform the accounting, finance and administrative functions of the Foundation. 

After graduating from the University of Otago, Nicholas took up a graduate position with Ernst & Young in their Melbourne office in early 2006, where he is now completing the Chartered Accounting program.

Nicholas is also the Treasurer of the Otago Alumni Melbourne Chapter. Nic was recently awarded life membership of the New Zealand Law Students Association and has been mentoring disadvantaged children in regional Victoria through the Smith Family i-track mentoring program since 2006.
